I am a freelance artist living and working in York, UK. I specialise in textiles, particularly freehand machine embroidery, but still draw and paint as well as making historical costumes. At present the themes are to do with landscape, moving through it, distances and spaces, and of course the trees.
We are surrounded by landscape, it is a fusion of our needs and the underlying structures of the land itself. It is also a complex fiction that many of us believe in. Our relationship with it is endlessly fascinating and constantly changing, and this is at the root of my textile work. I explore this through manipulation of surfaces and structure, using hand and machine stitch, inclusions of found textures and colour to create images and evocative histories.
The work disciplines tend to cross pollinate quite freely – I am beginning to draw more as I would on the sewing machine while the textile pieces look more like my paintings. Combining so many approaches and disciplines may create a very unpredictable way of working but it is fun. I like the idea of orchestrating and directing rather than being in absolute control; certainly no two pieces will ever be the same. Every time I plug in and switch on it is an adventure.
